Uma casa reformada com memórias

O ano era 1960 quando o crítico de dança Francis Mason se apaixonou por uma das casas de tijolos vermelhos da Charlton Street, rua na região nova-iorquina de Greenwich Village. Logo aquele seria o lar em que ele e sua esposa Patricia, que acabou se tornando uma famosa corretora de imóveis na região, criariam sua filha Leslie Mason.

O tempo passou e a garota tornou-se uma amante de casas como seus pais. Aos 30, largou a profissão de atriz e seguiu os passos da mãe, tornando-se também uma corretora. As lembranças da vizinhança ganharam força em sua memória e, em 2001, ela acabou comprando por cerca de US$ 2 milhões uma casa como a que havia crescido a apenas algumas portas de onde moraram seus pais.

Foram necessários 12 anos até que ela e o marido, Thad Meyerriecks, ambos na casa dos 50, conseguissem reformar a construção, que havia sido dividida em 3 apartamentos. Ao vender a casa anterior para a diretora de cinema Sofia Coppola por cerca de US$ 9 milhões, resolveram desembolsar mais U$ 1 milhão para o retrofit. É nesse ponto que entram na história o arquiteto David Hottenroth e a designer de interiores Elizabeth Bauer.

O charmoso prédio passou a integrar novamente apenas uma residência. O que antes era o apartamento térreo – onde Francis Mason morou durante os últimos seis meses de vida, em 2009 – tornou-se uma sala de estar. Em um dos andares, foi mantida a renovação feita por um antigo morador dos anos 1960, que havia trazido de volta as características originais da construção. Além disso, foi contruída uma extensão de dois andares com uma enorme parede de janelas que deixa entrar a vista do quintal criado por Miranda Brooks, em 2003. Na área verde, mais lembranças: o jardim foi composto apenas pelas plantas favoritas da mãe de Leslie.
